Being Future Being is a multi-scalar work, created by Emily Johnson for the stage and beyond. Featuring a newly commissioned score by Raven Chacon, Being Future Being conjures present joy, and asks audiences to consider new creation stories with the power to sustain a world that must begin again. This new project seeks to (re)build visions of the forces that brought this world into being, while ushering in new futures with the potential to reshape the way we relate to ourselves, and to the human and more-than-human cohabitants of our worlds. With Being Future Being, the performance is a starting point for relationship, one that asks audiences to join in a community process that flows from each presentation, out and into the world—actions brought to fruition with community stewardship. Being Future Being’s creative process is Indigenous-led, and developed in collaboration with organizations and organizers in ways that foster Indigenous kin, accomplices, and audience relationships.

Being Future Being was commissioned by The Broad Stage at Santa Monica College, and is a National Performance Network (NPN) Creation and Development Fund Project co-commissioned by Bunnell Street Arts Center (AK); New York Live Arts (NY); Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (OR) and NPN, with contributions from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Ford Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
